Danica in Kocani May 29

After the first encounter with the locals we continued to Kocani, the "famous" music willage expecting some small gypsy town. It was quite big city ( 35000 people) we change money and went to buy some food to a small market. We where getting hungry and we searched for “burek”. After some time we found small bakery. There we met Danica she shared with us very personal story and showed us her point of view of situation in Kocani and east Macedonia. We asked her if there is something interesting in Kocani and she told us that we should go to dam Gratce.

Danica from Kocani

Last 10 years she is working in bakery which is specialized for ”burek”.
Has one son and one daughter, 3 grandchildren.
Her daughter is medicine worker in one hospital in Skopje, her son is in Kocani “doing nothing”, he is unemployed. It is hard to find job in Kocani.

“I had a brother and he had a wife from Poland, Christina. They lived in Poland and had a male child. 7 days they where at my house like guests. My brother died in 1988. I have never seen his son again. Stojan is his name, he lives somewhere in Poland”

“Here, people are mostly doing nothing.”

“I worked since 1994. in state firm, the firm is crushed, since than I am here in bakery.
Nobody is working, state-firms are closed, nothing…The time stopped here.
There is no work, no money, nothing is interesting here.”

“People are leaving Kocani, they goes to bigger towns like Skopje, or Italy, a lot of Macedonians exiled to Italy. Everybody is in Italy.”

“Nobody is investing at east part of Macedonia, nothing, nothing…everything goes to Skopje, to Ohrid or to Tetovo where Albanians are. We are forgotten, we have to care of ourselves alone. Tourists are not coming here.”

“You can go to the dam, we have a beautiful dam-Gratce, it is very nice, there is a motel, restaurant, you can see the nature, people businessman, everything… it is very nice, nothing else is interesting here…The dam is 10 kilometers from here, ambient is beautiful, nature is beautiful and you have a dam. You can walk to the dam.”

“The school is here. If the school is not here I would not have life, parents have to give money to the children, they give them only 10 denars, but what they can buy for 10 denars. They can not eat” burek” like you are doing now. Everyone would like to eat like you but they do not have money.”

“There is so many Gypsies, here in Kocani, they are discriminated the most. Here are only Macedonians and Gypsies, no Albanians, no Serbian, nobody else…only us. Here in Kocani we have Gypsie part of town.”
“I am here in bakery from 5 a.m. in the morning.”

Why you are making only portraits, take some picture about nature.
“Why my portrait is interesting for you”

“We older people are working for the young people.”
“I can not live without working, just to have job, you can live without everything else.
My greatest wish is that my son finds a job, if not here than somewhere abroad.”

“We have learned Serbo-croatian language, while we where in Yugoslavia. Before in times of old Yugoslavia everything was better, when Tito was alive. We were building our houses, we had nice vacations, Bulgaria, Greece, Ohrid, we traveled to Serbia to see Tito grave, until 1980 everything was better. I like to travel but I do not have money, I want to go to Skopje, my daughter is in Skopje, but where is the money? So that is that, like we are saying - living in province “provincija …”
“I have 51 year.” (Danica)
