Vladimir from Prilep
Actor, born in 1977, 28 years old, living in Prilep, employed in City theatre of Prilep, working also in some plays in capital of Macedonia-Skopje, girl friend is from Skopje, living in apartment together with mother, father, brother, his wife and child. Studied in Skopje, postgraduate studies in Belgrade(Serbia). His payment is 250 euros per month. He does not feel as home in Prilep, neither in Skopje, because half of week he is in Prilep, half in Skopje. Sometimes he does not like the process of making performances in his theatre, sometimes he feel that this is provincial theatre. He likes to work with motivation.
But he is satisfied with his life.
Living near the Marco s hill (Markovi kuli), this hill is dominating over the city, on the top of the hill is big orthodox cross, it was installed there during the fights with Albanians, like in many other places in Macedonia. Also there are ruins of old Marko s fortress (king Marco). The czar Samuilo died in that fortress of hard attack when he saw his army, without eyes…

“In Prilep are living around 60 000 of people."

"My primary school is just in front of my home. When the school was founded in 1985. the name of the school was Josip Broz Tito, when old Yugoslavia disappeared the name was Tocila-like this part of Prilep (suburb), and after death of founder of Macedonian grammar -Blaze Koneski the school was named by him.”

“I can tell you one interesting story: In early ages of Twenty century here were the Turks - muslims. Citizens of Prilep were Slavic and they wanted to have their own religion. In that time people were listening liturgy in one churh on Greece language. But Bulgarian language was more similar to Macedonian and they wanted to build a new church in which they could practice religion on Bulgarian. They were waiting for answer from Instanbul fore more than 5 years. Finally Turks approved that they can build a church but there was a condition: the church can not be higher than the mosque. The funny thing is that people built a church with one underground floor, so at the end the whole church was higher than a mosque, but it was not obvious to the Turks.”

“You see this is my theatre, we can go inside.”

“People are here very relaxed, nothing can surprise us. But nobody wants to change something, to do something new. We all live very careless life. I have the opinion that every men in Macedonia is living like he is the richest men on the world. Everything what they have they will spend, and nobody care what could happen tomorrow. It is good for people to think like that, but people are poor, they do not have so much to use. Society is very closed, people can not travel so much, to see the rest of the world. Young people are careless here, they will say: we are unemployed, we have no money. But they can find some joy, some way to live. You saw, cafés are full, young people are in restaurants, they are living…’
I think that in Macedonia exist two ways of thinking. One side is very nostalgic for old Yugoslavia. Another part will say that because of old Yugoslavia we are poor now, because communists took a lot during their 50 years. The opinions are very different.
My memory of socialism: I was born in 1977, I never met Tito, I do not remember so much. I was Tito s pioneer. Now I look on that time in artistic way, they knew how to make a theatre from that, to show the power, America is now doing the same. For me that was a system, very well organized, because everybody was satisfied. But like in every totalitarian system somebody live good somebody lose. For me, personally, the good thing from that period is that the country was bigger, with more opened borders. I grow up with Serbian and Croatian music, I watched Serbian and Croatian movies. That was for me native, mine, I cannot erase that from me. That is part of me, I cannot divide that, that it is not my heritage. It does not matter. A lot of people are still living in that time. People of my age everybody is positive about it, I have only positive experience about it; I did not meet somebody who is negative.”
“A lot of kids now are learning English language, it is very good for young people. They want to know English, they are going also to private lessons. For me it is perfect because they are computer kids and they use English like native language, it is good for exchange. It is different than it was 50 years ago, they are more opened.” (Vladimir)
